Super Bowl Odds – Defense Does not Usually Win

Check out the 2011 Superbowl odds at the on line sport book before the big game!

For the 1st time since Super Bowl XVII in Super Bowl prospects, the top two defenses in the nfl will be meeting.

The Steelers were 1st in the nfl in fewest points granted while the Packers were 2nd. The Packers are 2-point favorites in Super Bowl wagering at SBG with the total showed at 44.5.

Super Bowl XVII between Washington and Miami matched up the top two defenses in the nfl and the total on the game in Super Bowl prospects was showed at 36.5. It flew over that number as Washington won 27-17. It is unusual in sports when the top two defenses actually meet. The last time it happened in baseball was in the 1995 World Series when the Atlanta Braves beat the Cleveland Indians. The Braves had a great pitching staff that season that included Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine. In hockey you have to go back to 1999 when the Sabres and Dallas Stars met for the Stanley Cup. The Sabres led the nfl in goals versus while the Stars were 2nd and it was Dallas who won the Cup. You don’t have to go pretty as far back in pro basketball as it happened in the 2005 NBA Finals when Detroit met San Antonio. The Detroit Pistons had the top ranked defense while the Spurs were number two. That series went seven games with the Spurs in the long run winning.

Sixth Seed
Green Bay is only the 2nd number 6 seed ever to make it to the Super Bowl and the 1st from the NFC. The simply other number 6 seed ironically enough was the Steelers who in 2005 won their three road games and in the long run the Super Bowl. Clubs that only sneak into the playoffs usually don’t do well. Pro basketball has simply had one #8 seed ever make pro basketball Finals and the Knicks were dispatched in 1999 by the Spurs. The Edmonton Oilers made the Stanley Cup Final as a #8 seed in 2006 but lost in the Finals to Carolina.

Last Meeting
You could have forgotten the last time that the Steelers and Packers played but it was a memorable game. They played in December of 2009 in a great game that main 886 passing yards. Pittsburgh qb Ben Roethlisberger threw for 503 yards while Aaron Rodgers threw for 383. It was the greatest combined passing yards ever in Nfl history in a game that had no picks. The clubs combined for 35 points in the 4th quarter alone and Pittsburgh won 37-36 on a last 2nd TD from Roethlisberger to Mike Wallace.
